Dear Southerners (and, hi, flist, hi!)

Yep, that's white stuff coming out of the sky. No, you shouldn't drive anywhere tonight -- because lord knows we don't know how to salt the roads beforehand down here in Alabama, and we're still a little hazy about sanding afterward.

Your Apparently (Quasi-)Yankee Friend

Actually, there hasn't been much snow here, mostly just the tinkle of freezing rain. I swear it was snowing, sleeting, and raining all at the same time this afternoon.

It's been a good day to be inside, curled up on the couch alternately working on my syllabi (omg, school again on Wednesday!) and watching 30 Rock (end of season 3) and Slings and Arrows (seasons 1 & 2). Tina Fey continues to be my hero, which I'm sure you won't find all that weird -- but I'm almost certain it's not normal that I find Paul Gross really hot when he's playing an unkempt, flaily, frustrated, batshit-crazy theater director.

I've been knitting all afternoon (working on a pair of socks), but something tells me I need to make a winter music mix of some sort...

update (ahaha, it's about time)

I realized this morning that I never reported about my cell phone situation. Apparently, rumors of its death were greatly exaggerated. The next morning, I plugged it in and it chirped happily and has been fine since. My mother, however, reminded me that this is probably just a reprieve, given the age of the thing, so I might ought to get myself a new one.

Where have I been the last few weeks? Hibernating in my house. Battling depression a bit, but also getting a good deal of reading and working done. I've turned in a draft of my dissertation prospectus -- later than I meant to by a few months -- so I'm not waiting around to get it accepted and defended. I'm starting on a chapter. It's nerdy stuff about part-to-whole relationships in short story cycles and novels, and I'll explain it to you if you ask me about it, but suffice it to say it requires me to talk about the whole oeuvre of Willa Cather, as well as Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs and John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. I'd recommend either of those last two -- very different in tone (one about late 19th c. life in a Maine fishing village, one about life in depression-era California), but both charming and easy-to-read episodic narratives of community. And short.

Otherwise, I've been knitting (a cardigan, a blanket, some socks) and mainlining NBC comedies. I blew through season one of Community (I never wanted to be in love with Joel McHale, but these things happen; also, Abed is my favorite) and I'm also up to season three of 30 Rock (I'm loving the growing friendship between Liz and Jack). Soon, I'll be turning to Parks and Rec. Unless y'all think it's not worth it...

yay! and bleargh :(

I'm at home with my mother and my sister, and I've done nothing the last two days but lie around and watch Community and Fringe, knit, and eat Christmas candy. Today, I got to visit with old friends, and I got my Christmas shopping completely done, finally!

So today was a good day -- until this evening, when my cell phone suddenly died. It was sudden and unexpected, but not shocking, given how old the thing is.

Cross your fingers that I can get that issue resolved tomorrow morning. I'm doing a lot of driving on potentially snowy roads over the next three days, and it will be nice to have emergency connection to the rest of the world.

Remembering John Spencer (Dec. 20, 1946 – Dec. 16, 2005)

When you see this, quote Leo McGarry...

Leo and Jordan walk to LEO'S OFFICE where Josh is waiting.

What do you need?

Ten words. Let me try two on you. Defense: "I will make America's defenses the strongest
in the history of the world."

In the history of the world? When we say that are we comparing ourselves to the Visigoths,
adjusted for inflation?

Yay, nominee Scott Caan! Also, random yays for 30 Rock and Community!

And we're just going to ignore how I've not been around for, like...three weeks? Because I've been dealing with end-of-semester stress which compounded the fact that I'm balancing two grad programs and teaching duties. (Wrote a paper about pornography and public library internet access for my first library school class, finished a draft of my motherfucking dissertation prospectus for my English PhD, and graded papers and exams for my EN 101 students.) In general I've been feeling v. v. avoidy, probably because all that stuff was extremely tiresome and I didn't want to talk about it. Or anything, really. So I've missed a lot of stuff, including birthdays.

But we're ignoring all this, yes? And celebrating the awesomeness of H50! Anyone want to join me in doing the wave?

Things I'm also currently doing the wave over: 30 Rock and Community.

30 Rock -- My best friend made me marathon almost all of season one yesterday. I was intensely skeptical. If there are three actors I really can't stand, it's Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski, and especially fucking Tracey Morgan. But it SO WORKS. IDEK, people. Um, Tina Fey is made of awesome? Yep, I'm going with that.

Community -- Last night I went to a potluck party and the host had on the Community stop-motion Christmas special, which I admit I only half-assedly watched, but then he played us the paintball episode and I was hooked. I have also seen the ABBA zombie ep, but that's it so far. I'd tried watching the show once a while back, but I'm slow to warm up to comedies, and this one didn't grab me right off the bat. I'm glad I was forced to give it a second chance, because it's so much fun.

Anyway, what are your new obsessions, flist? I'm beginning to think I should always pay attention to the everchanging tide of fandom love -- for example, the recent outpouring of flail for Community -- no matter how dubious I am...

Don't Hassle the Hoff

Dear, you're even more of a parody of yourself than Shatner.

See, Shatner never went on national television and sang the lame theme song to his lame '90s tv show as though he were drunk in a karaoke bar.

*iz glad it's over*

It is over, right?

Harry Potter 7.1: drabbles?

Saw a midnight show on Thursday. It was fabulous. Don't feel like a long, drawn-put blog post about it, but if you wanna poke me with questions, I'll definitely answer, likely with CAPS and squee.

Now, let's say I wanted to write drabble-y creatures. Would you prompt me? Put another way, will you help me meet my mini_wrimo quota (for once, lol)?

As always, no promises, but I'll do my best.

Character or pairing + prompt word

I don't write baddies...unless they are be reasonably redeemable. This means no Bellatrix or Lucius, but I like Draco.

I'm shit for outright Harry/Hermione, but I'll give you all the subtexty Harry + Hermione friends-with-UST that you want. I'm totally up for Harry/Ron and Hermione/Ron, though.

Other pairings might be shakier.

But I'm willing to have a go at gen fic for any relatively known character (i.e., don't give me a Yaxley, but a Tonks or a Fleur would be A-OK).

Planetary (GO!)

Apparently, there was a Fabulous Killjoys hole in my soul that I didn't even know about.

(Yes, I am a bad person who listened to the leaked copy of the album, but I plan on buying it when (a) it comes out for real and (b) I have some money for real.)
